Leadership Strategies to Mentor Virtuous Leaders for the AI Future (YouVersion)
Developing leadership strategies for today’s fast-paced, digitally connected, and AI-powered world is challenging. In the middle of all this change, one truth remains: great leaders are built from the inside out.
The need for strong, character-driven leaders is more urgent than ever. Your leadership matters now, more than ever. You are standing in your Convergence moment—the culmination of your calling, character, and competencies—for Kingdom impact that expands through the leaders you mentor.
That’s why I’m reprinting and building on my YouVersion devotional, originally created back in 2017. While this devotional was written as a companion resource to Millennials Matter: Proven Strategies for Building Your Next-Gen Leader, I’m now expanding those insights into an updated series of leadership development articles.
The devotional series is rooted in Matthew 28:19—“Go and make disciples…” Or, as I say, “In your going, be making disciples…”
Here’s an excerpt from Millennials Matter that helps illustrate this principle –
“In the ancient world, a great patriarch, Moses, mentored another great leader, Joshua. As we examine today’s challenges, we recognize the need for strong, wise Christian leaders like Joshua. However, Joshua became a Joshua because he had a Moses. He had someone who invested time in his development as a leader. We cannot expect a Joshua, Joseph, Ruth, or Deborah today to lead the charge into the future without there being a mentor.”
In other words, while Moses was leading the people, he was also discipling Joshua.
That’s the call on your life also. In fact, you are standing in your Convergence moment—the culmination of your calling, character, and competencies. Your Kingdom impact expands through the leaders you mentor.

Seemingly unrelated, disconnected events happen during our lives. Then one day you wake up and realize all those events were leading up to now. It’s the moment where God merges your years of leadership talents, skills, experiences, and wisdom for a greater purpose. Your purpose.
At some point in their lives, most Christians ask, “What is my purpose?” In Matthew 28:19, Jesus answers that “what” question: “Go and make disciples of all nations . . .” (NIV). That is our purpose. Why? The apostle Paul answers the “why”: “God our Savior . . . wants all men to be saved” (1 Timothy 2:3-4 NIV). Our purpose is to make disciples who make disciples, so that all have the chance to believe in God and be saved.
I teach and equip business leaders and mentors based on Matthew 28:19: You are to make disciples as you are going. That means 24/7, even at work. After all, faith comes from hearing the good news of Jesus Christ (Romans 10:17) from someone who knows it and lives it. So, God is calling you to live out your faith every day, in every circumstance, with every person you meet, even in your work environment. He is inviting you to make disciples, especially of the emerging leaders in your sphere of influence, which may be at your work.
This faith/work integration is a challenge for all of us, especially for millennials. Many millennials haven’t had role models who truly know how to live out their faith at work. Far too often, they’ve seen leaders who keep Sunday apart from the rest of the week.
I’ve been inspired to understand “go and make disciples” as a 24/7 endeavor integrated with our vocation. God has called us to each of our professions. It’s a perfect location for mentoring others, particularly young leaders, in how to live their faith in everyday life. It’s workplace ministry. We are marketplace ministers.
How do we make, or mentor, discipling leaders who themselves will make discipling leaders? Over the next seven days, I’ll answer the “how?”. Here’s a hint: We make these disciples by inspiring them to build a strong faith-based character core, using the acronym DAKOTA. A ranch in frigid North Dakota is the place where, during my childhood of difficult weather and living conditions (including no running water), I discovered the connection between character and faith. I pray this series fills you and stirs you through its insights.
Updated Reflections
In Millennials Matter, I share how ancient virtues and modern frameworks like D.A.K.O.T.A. equip emerging leaders. These leaders will be needed not just in boardrooms, but in start-ups, communities, and every corner of our rapidly evolving world.
Here’s a sneak peek of the insights I’ll discuss in this series —
To help translate ancient virtues into modern-day leadership development, I created the D.A.K.O.T.A. Framework.
Rooted in timeless wisdom and shaped for today’s challenges, this framework is designed to guide you as you mentor Next-Gen leaders and help them build a strong, courageous character core.
Each letter stands for a practical, actionable trait that connects directly to one of the seven classical virtues—bringing together faith, formation, and leadership strategy.
Here’s how I see those connections play out through the six D.A.K.O.T.A. character traits:
D – Determination (Fortitude) – When Life Gets Tough, Character Kicks In
- Determination embodies this by digging deep when the easy road says, “Quit.” It’s about showing up, staying resilient, and pushing through challenges with grit and conviction.
- Fortitude is courage and perseverance in the face of adversity.
- Leadership Skills Benefit: In today’s fast-paced, AI-powered world, Next-Gen leaders don’t just need technical skills—they need resilience that’s forged in faith and character.
A – Awareness (Prudence) – Understand Who You Are and Why That Matters
- Prudence is wisdom in action—making thoughtful, well-informed decisions.
- Awareness is leading with clarity. Think of it as W.I.N.D: Wisdom, Insight, Knowledge, and Discernment.
- Leadership Benefit: In an era of digital overload and rapid change, Next-Gen leaders must cultivate emotional intelligence, discernment, and spiritual clarity to make wise choices in complex situations.
K – Knowledge (Justice) – Doing What’s Right Starts with Knowing What’s Right
- Knowledge empowers leaders to make ethical decisions in a world full of gray areas. Grounded in justice, knowledge becomes more than facts—it becomes a foundation for righteous influence.
- Justice is fairness, integrity, and doing what is right—even when it’s hard.
- Leadership Benefit: In the AI era, character-based knowledge helps Next-Gen leaders lead fairly and with impact, stay informed, and earn lasting trust.
O – Optimism (Hope) – Fueling Forward Momentum in Adversity
- Optimism isn’t about ignoring reality—it’s about maintaining a positive vision, inspiring others, and embracing innovation with courage.
- Hope is the virtue that keeps us anchored in possibility and purpose.
- Leadership Performance Benefit: In times of uncertainty, Next-Gen leaders who lead with hope fuel progress, lift morale, and model a mindset grounded in faith rather than fear.
T – Trustworthiness (Faith) – Trust is the Currency of Influence
- Faith is rooted in belief, trust, and unwavering conviction.
- Trustworthiness means showing up with integrity, consistency, and honesty—doing what you say and living out your values.
- Leadership Benefit: In a skeptical and AI-influenced world, Next-Gen leaders who model trustworthiness become dependable voices others follow, expanding their influence through character.
A – Accountability (Temperance) – Where Self-Control Meets Maturity
- Temperance reflects balance, humility, and restraint in the face of pressure.
- Accountability means owning your actions, welcoming feedback, and staying grounded in truth and values—even when it’s tough.
- Leadership Strategy Benefit: When Next-Gen leaders embrace accountability, they strengthen integrity, sharpen decision-making, and become more trusted and impactful in their leadership.
Love is the Root That Nourishes It All
In this series, you will explore six essential character traits through the D.A.K.O.T.A. framework—but none of them can grow without love. Like the deep roots of a tree, love anchors and nourishes leadership. It feeds your Next-Gen leader’s character (the trunk), which then supports the visible fruit—determination, awareness, knowledge, optimism, trustworthiness, and accountability.
These traits only flourish when they’re grounded in love. As Scripture reminds us, love is the greatest virtue. It’s what connects us to God, to others, and to our calling. When love is the source, character becomes strong, and your Next-Gen leaders grow into who they were made to be.
How to Use The D.A.K.O.T.A. Framework
The articles in this series follow a simple structure designed for real-world impact:
- A clear leadership challenge that coaches often face
- Practical insights and action steps you can implement immediately
- A biblical example or reference to anchor your mentoring in God’s truth
- Reflective questions or exercises to spark meaningful dialogue with your Next-Gen leader
The D.A.K.O.T.A Framework will help you do more than pass along leadership development tips—it will help you shape leaders for the future through strong, Christ-centered character.
Whether you’re meeting over coffee, connecting virtually, or walking through life side by side with your Next-Gen leader, use this series to invest intentionally in their growth.
In the next post, we’ll explore the moment when your character, calling, and competencies align—your convergence moment. This is what you were made for. And this is why your leadership matters—now more than ever.
In the next article, we discuss what Convergence is as a leadership concept and why it’s important to you.
