Unstoppable Leadership Influence: Building Confidence, Connection, and Character in an AI World (NAPE)
I never imagined a conversation at NAPE Summit, the world’s largest oil & gas exploration and production expo, would produce another powerful leadership development aha moment!
The energy in the convention center is electric. I’m in Houston with The Triple T, Inc. Â NAPE is where industry leaders gather to buy, sell, and trade oil & gas prospects. And, we are here selling.
Amid the buzz of deal-making and innovation, I’m getting to know Don, who is introducing us to key contacts.
During breaks, we talk about my work with Millennials Matter. He then asks me about my vision moving forward. I respond with, “I’m working on my next book, Mindsets Minder: Proven Strategies for Building Character in Your Next Gen Leader.”
Don nods. With a knowing smile, he says, “So, you’re promoting H.I. in the world of A.I.”
Noticing my puzzled look, he continues, “Human Ingenuity in the world of Artificial Intelligence.”
His words stop me in my tracks. Yes! That’s it! That simple phrase captures the heart of my work. I want to help leaders harness the power of AI without losing Human Ingenuity. This makes leadership impactful.
Human Ingenuity defines our ability to think creatively and solve complex problems. We bring a depth of wisdom that machines can’t replicate. Harnessing that power is the foundation of effective leadership. In a world increasingly shaped by AI, it’s more critical than ever.
Leadership Aha: Human Ingenuity in the World of Artificial Intelligence.
This moment with Don reminds me why I do what I do. AI is a powerful tool. The future of leadership will require us to be powerfully grounded in Human Ingenuity, to integrate technology while staying deeply rooted in human connection, character, and confidence.

I liked these leadership quotes. So, I asked ChatGPT for more – to summarize an article I wrote about our conversation on the 5 Unstoppable Strategies to Prosper in the Age of AI Podcast. This summary captures the essence of navigating the intersection of AI and Human Ingenuity. (Although I’m not completely certain of ChatGPT’s grammar, punctuation, or tenses…but, here it is.)

Building Character, Confidence, and ConnectionÂ
In today’s fast-paced environment, leaders need more than technical knowledge. They need emotional intelligence and adaptability. They need to inspire confidence in themselves and others.
How might you navigate the challenges of AI integration? You need to stay true to human-centric leadership principles.
It’s time to discover leadership skills that stand the test of time. Are you leading your Next-Gen through technological disruption? Or refining your leadership influence? In a rapidly shifting market, these strategies will equip you to thrive.
Character: The Foundation of Steadfast Leadership
Character remains a non-negotiable pillar in times of rapid change. It’s the bedrock that supports every other aspect of leadership. In the hustle of digital disruption and technological advances, it can be easy to get swept up in trends. We neglect what truly matters. Yet, as leaders, we must return to our core mission, vision, and values. In the podcast, I highlighted an important truth. We need to stay true to these anchors that allow us to lead with authenticity and integrity. Then, we guide our teams with a clear, unwavering moral compass.
For those of us in leadership, it’s essential to resist the pull of superficial wins. Character-driven leaders are intentional. They know when to say no to initiatives that don’t align with their mission. Here’s another key takeaway. Yes, there may be countless opportunities in front of us. This is especially true in the AI age. Digital transformation opens doors we didn’t even know existed. Now, we must discern between what is simply good and what is truly great for our teams and organizations.
This ability to remain steadfast comes down to our inner work. Regular reflection is not optional; it’s crucial. I carve out dedicated time weekly, monthly, and annually to assess my vision and values. Are my leadership strategies still aligned to these values? This practice of intentional self-reflection equips leaders to remain focused on what matters. Even as the external world shifts at a dizzying pace.
Confidence: Facing the Unknown with Poise
Here’s another powerful insight from a leadership coach I worked with years ago, Juanell Teague. She said, “Fear spreads a layer of Vaseline over your eyes, preventing you from seeing clearly. Gratitude dissolves the Vaseline and restores your ability to see what is and what can be.” This metaphor holds even greater significance today. We’re facing the unknowns of AI and exponential technological change. Confidence, contrary to popular belief, isn’t about ignoring these fears. Instead, it’s about acknowledging those fears and moving forward regardless.
Many business presidents and CEOs are dealing with an invisible burden. The fear of failing, of becoming obsolete, or making the wrong strategic choice. Yet, effective leaders recognize that fear might be present. They also know it doesn’t have to dictate decisions. I’ve shared stories from my early career at Xerox. Here, moments of uncertainty tested my confidence. I faced many challenges. Sometimes, it was facing a tough negotiation. At other times, I was leading a team under pressure, reinforcing an important lesson. We build confidence when we choose to take action despite uncertainty.
This era is defined by AI and exponential growth. Leaders must cultivate this internal confidence. It’s crucial not only for their own peace of mind but also for modeling it for their teams. Allow your employees to see how you remain forward-thinking, even in turbulent times. This fosters trust and loyalty. Confidence, then, is contagious. It encourages teams to approach problems with a proactive mindset. They will learn to embrace change as an opportunity rather than a threat.
Connection: The Heartbeat of Building Trust and Collaboration
As technology advances, there is a common fear. Will the human element in business diminish? I refuse to believe that it will. As I mentor and coach leaders, I find that human interaction is more valuable than ever. Technology, including AI, can enhance communication. It provides new tools for collaboration. However, it cannot replicate the authenticity of human connection. This is why I am so passionate about emphasizing good leadership. It’s universal and timeless. It doesn’t matter whether you’re leading Millennials, Gen Z, or Baby Boomers. Everyone is searching for leaders who are present and engaged.
I also spoke about an experience that underscored the power of connection. A leadership summit led my son Westin, to deliver a surprising yet impactful message. He said, “Mom, we don’t need more brilliant talking heads. We need someone who’s going to come along and walk beside us.” This was a wake-up call for me. It’s a reminder that leadership is not about being on a pedestal but about journeying with those we lead.
For business leaders today, fostering connection means making room for open communication. Focus on relationships over processes. Employees want you to see them as whole people. They’re not mere contributors to the bottom line. In our family business, I’ve seen the power of investing in coaching workshops. You get to encourage younger team members to develop their vision and values. This can transform not only their engagement but also their performance.
As CEOs and presidents, you are in a unique position. You can bridge the gap between technological advancement and human connection. Focus on empathy (without falling into the “empathy trap” where you sacrifice productivity.) Then, you show that you value people for more than their output. In doing so, you create a culture where innovation thrives. Why? Because employees feel secure and understood.
