Find the Secrets to Successful Character-Based Leadership for the AI Age in D.A.K.O.T.A. (YouVersion Series Summary))

Creating Your Leadership Strategy today is not for the faint of heart. In a world of constant disruption and digital noise, leaders everywhere are asking: Will we lead AI or will AI enslave us?

I believe the answer lies in another question every leader should ask.

How do I stay grounded, authentic, and influential when everything is changing so fast?

That’s where the D.A.K.O.T.A. Framework comes in. I developed this simple yet powerful roadmap to help you lead with character in the AI Era.

During a recent CRU Executive Coaching Cohort with Bob Tiede, author of Leading with Questions, and Marc Rutter, US Director of Leadership Development and HR, I had a moment of insight. Marc mentioned The Magic of Thinking Big by David Schwartz. I first read this book early in my career at Xerox. When did you first read it?

Marc’s summary caught my attention: “Big people monopolize the listening. Small people monopolize the talking.”

This simple line captures the essence of the DAKOTA Leadership Framework, doesn’t it? It’s a model focused on listening, learning, and leading.

Throughout this series, we’ve explored six key character traits—Determination, Awareness, Knowing, Optimism, Trustworthiness, and Accountability. Each one builds the backbone of your leadership influence. Together, they shape leaders of character who live out the words of Matthew 28:19:

“Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations…”

Because leadership, at its core, is a discipleship journey.

The Leadership Calling You’re Made For

At the heart of this entire D.A.K.O.T.A. journey is one truth: You are called to develop character-based leaders for the Age of AI.

Each D.A.K.O.T.A. trait reveals a truth about the kind of leader our world desperately needs.

Here’s a summary of these six character traits and how they prepare you to live and lead in the Age of AI.

D – Determination: Keep Going When It’s Hard

When obstacles show up, many young leaders struggle to push through. Determination is about showing up, again and again, even when it’s hard. It’s the quiet courage to keep going, especially when a shortcut is just a click away. And in today’s AI world, where it’s easy to avoid effort, leaders who can endure discomfort are more valuable, and more needed than ever.

A – Awareness: See with Clarity and Compassion

In the age of AI, external pressures and digital noise can drown out your true voice and identity. Awareness helps you rise above the noise. By reflecting inward, outward, and upward, you can evaluate what no longer fits. You will learn how to move from performing to leading with purpose and identity. In this age of artificial intelligence, the greatest leadership skill isn’t found in a machine. It is found in leaders who are aware of their calling.

K – Knowing: Stand Secure in Who You Are

It’s easy to know a lot—but harder to know what’s right. Without conviction, even good intentions can drift off course. That’s why leadership in this new AI era isn’t just about information—it’s about formation. You’re called to lead with character, not convenience. Because in the end, leadership isn’t simply influence—it’s sacred stewardship.

O – Optimism: Lead with Hope and Gratitude

Without optimism, leaders become problem-focused and lose hope — and when your optimism fades, those who follow you lose courage too. Optimism is the character virtue that anchors your leadership when everything around you feels unstable – like quicksand. When you intentionally model and mentor optimism, you help those you lead turn their own “quicksand” moments into solid ground.

T – Trustworthiness: Build a Foundation of Credibility

Leaders can have vision or even authority—but if people don’t trust you, they won’t follow you far. Trust is the currency for your leadership influence – the invisible glue that holds relationships together. In the Age of AI, you need to make trust the foundation of your leadership strategies when you coach others. Trustworthy leaders say what they mean—and mean what they say. They honor commitments, protect confidences, and speak truth with grace. When trust grows, so does your leadership influence.

A – Accountability: The Backbone of Influence

Without accountability, leadership collapses into blame games. Accountability is the backbone of your leadership influence—and a strategic advantage in the Age of AI. Learn how to make accountability a core part of your leadership toolkit and coach others to do the same. Ask yourself: “What might I do to create an accountability culture for those I lead? This is your leadership mandate. In today’s AI Era, accountability is the character virtue that opens doors to creative solutions.

The Moment of Convergence

When these six character traits come together, something powerful happens. You begin leading from the inside out: anchored in character, guided by calling, and equipped for impact.

This is what leadership expert, Dr. Robert Clinton, calls your leadership moment of Convergence. It’s when everything God has invested in your life—your experiences, skills, and faith—aligns with His purpose for you as a leader.

In this AI Era, Convergence keeps your leadership deeply human. Technology may shape how we communicate, but character shapes how we lead.

A Final Word on Leadership

This completes the D.A.K.O.T.A. Framework journey—but it’s not the end. It’s the beginning of a new chapter in your leadership growth.

As you coach determination, awareness, knowing, optimism, trustworthiness, and accountability, you are shaping leaders who will live out their calling with character and courage.

Remember that book I mentioned in the opening of this article? In Leading with Questions, you are reminded to lead by listening and learning. This is a journey for you AND those you coach.

And here’s the ripple effect: the leaders you coach today will mentor others tomorrow. That’s how character multiplies. That’s how nations are influenced.

So stand firm. Lead with integrity in this Era of AI.

Because your leadership matters, now more than ever.

Leadership Question: Which D.A.K.O.T.A. trait do you sense God calling you to strengthen and model more intentionally in this next season of your leadership journey?

Leadership Lesson: When your character, calling, and competence converge, your leadership influence becomes unstoppable—and deeply human—in the Age of AI.
