Increase Your Leadership Insights by Reflecting on Whatever is True…

Even though I’m deeply engaged in leadership development, I have to confess—I’m still prone to grumbling when I could be grateful. That’s why, for the past couple of years, “Gratefulness” has been my word of the year. As a daily reminder, I’ve placed Philippians 4:8 in strategic spots—on my desk, my mirror, my journal—anywhere my eyes might land when my heart starts to drift.

This verse also anchors my D.A.K.O.T.A. character framework. It reminds me that Determination begins with thinking on what is true, Awareness flourishes when we focus on what is noble, and Knowledge deepens as we honor what is lovely and admirable. These habits of thought shape Optimism, strengthen Trust, and build Accountability—the bedrock of godly leadership in a noisy, confused world. Stay tuned for the revisions to my YouVersion devotional based on Millennials Matter: Proven Strategies for Building Your Next-Gen Leader.

As I was reflecting on this verse again recently, these words rose in my heart like a quiet prayer. I’m sharing them with you so that they might encourage you also.

Whatever Is True

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—
You call me to think on whatever is true,
when lies come at me day and night,
swirling through every feed, every channel, every screen.

You call me to dwell on what is noble,
while the profane and unholy shout for my attention,
trying to dull my heart and distract my soul.

You call me to cherish what is right,
even as wrong is celebrated—
dressed up as bold, clever, or heroic.

You invite me to ponder what is pure,
in a world that exalts impurity
and calls it freedom.

You remind me to gaze upon what is lovely,
though horror and distress fill every corner of the earth,
and beauty seems in short supply.

You whisper for me to see what is admirable,
when cynicism reigns
and mockery feels like the common tongue.

You call me to lift my eyes
to what is excellent and praiseworthy.
But oh Lord, I confess—
I cannot do this alone.

The pull of the world is strong;
the noise is relentless.
Help me fix my thoughts on Your way,
Your truth, Your Word.
Renew my mind,
that my life might be pleasing to You—
and that it might be well with my soul.
